Where Does the Limescale in My Water Kettle Come From?

Depending on which part of the UK you live in, you may notice that the bottom of your hot water kettle has sediments or “white bits” stuck to its heating element. These “white bits” are what’s commonly know as Limescale: a mixture of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate which is dissolved in your water supply. When heated above 61°C, these minerals precipitate out of hard water to form limescale or the sediments which you see at the bottom of your water kettles.

What’s the Best Way to REMOVE LIMESCALE from My Water Kettle?

Here are two simple ways to remove limescale from your hot water kettle:

1. Just Add Vinegar – It’s not just for chips you know!

  • •  Fill a cup with half water and the other half with white vinegar.
  • •  Throw into your water kettle, bring to the boil and leave overnight.

The acid in the vinegar helps break down the limescale build-up and all you need to do the next morning is simply rinse out your water kettle. You should have a sparkling, crystal clean hot water kettle again. (well, at least for a few days, until the limescale starts building up again)

2. Try Lemon Juice – Great for Gin and Tonics, Also Great for Removing Kettle Limescale

The citric acid in lemon juice works better in a lot of cases, than vinegar, in removing limescale from hot water kettles. Lemon juice also leaves a refreshing lemon smell in the bottom of your water kettle.

To get limescale removed with lemon juice, try the following steps:

  • •  Fill a cup with 50% water and 50% lemon juice and boil the mixture in your water kettle.
  • •  Keep overnight and rinse out in the morning.

You’ll soon be having that perfect cup of tea again, without worrying about limescale – what’s floating in the bottom of your water kettle.

Of course, both these limescale removing solutions only have a temporary effect. As the limescale builds-up, these limescale removal methods will have to be repeated each week or once a month, depending on how much limescale you have in your water supply.
